🎤 What Are K-pop Music Shows?

K-pop music shows are weekly broadcast programs where idol groups perform their latest songs live. They're a central part of the K-pop promotional cycle — groups typically spend 4–6 weeks promoting on music shows for each comeback.

M Countdown

Mnet · Thursdays · Exclusive to cable/streaming

The first major show to air each week, considered very prestigious. Known for high production value and frequent idol collaborations. First show to air results each week, setting the tone.

Music Bank

KBS2 · Fridays · Free-to-air

One of the longest-running music shows on a public broadcaster. Has international reach through KBS World. Known as a prestigious win due to KBS's cultural significance in Korea.

Inkigayo

SBS · Sundays · Free-to-air

The weekend flagship show. Hosted by popular idols in rotation. Often the biggest production spectacle of the week. "Inkigayo Sandwich" (free food event) is a fan tradition.

Show Champion

MBC M · Wednesdays · Cable

Hosted by popular idols, known for a more relaxed atmosphere and sometimes longer setlists. The first show of the promotion week — wins here set the competitive stage.

The Show

SBS MTV · Tuesdays · Cable

One of the first shows to introduce a real-time fan vote component. Often features rookie and smaller groups. Known for intimate stages and strong fan interaction.

🏆 How Do Music Show Wins Work?

Each show calculates a unique points total for each nominated song. The categories and weightings vary slightly per show, but all include:

💿
Digital Sales

Streaming numbers on Korean platforms (Melon, Genie, Bugs) during the eligibility window. Usually the largest weight — 30–40% of total score.

📦
Physical Sales

Album and single sales (Hanteo/Gaon chart data). Typically 5–15% — but some shows weight it higher, favoring groups with large physical fanbases.

📡
Broadcast Score

How often the song is played on the broadcaster's own radio and TV channels. Rewards exposure, usually 5–15% of total score.

👥
Fan Votes

Voting through the show's official app or site. Usually 10–25% of total score. Real-time voting often opens days before the episode airs.

📱
Social Media Score

YouTube views, Twitter/X mentions, and social engagement. Some shows include a "YouTube score" or "SNS score" as part of the formula — typically 5–10%.

👑 What Is a Triple Crown?

A Triple Crown is when a song wins on the same music show three or more consecutive weeks. For example, if a song wins M Countdown three weeks in a row, that's a Triple Crown on M Countdown.

Triple Crowns are highly celebrated because they prove not just initial popularity but sustained dominance on the charts. Some songs achieve Triple Crowns on multiple shows simultaneously — fans call this a "multi-triple crown" achievement.

💡 Rookie fans note: Some shows award a trophy called a "Bonsang" after each individual win, but the Triple Crown trophy is separate and celebrated differently by each broadcaster.

🗳️ How to Vote

Fan voting has become essential for groups without major broadcasting power. Here's how international fans can participate:

1
Streaming parties — Coordinate with fan accounts to stream simultaneously on Melon, Genie, Spotify, and YouTube. Concentrated streaming spikes increase chart positions that feed into digital scores.
2
Official voting apps — Each show has an official app (e.g. Inkigayo's SBS app, M Countdown's Mnet app). Download the app, create an account, and use your daily free votes plus any purchased votes.
3
Mubeat / IdolChamp / Fan N Star — Third-party fan voting platforms that many shows integrate with. You earn points by watching ads or completing tasks, then spend points on votes.
4
YouTube views — Watching the official MV on YouTube (through the SMTOWN, HYBE, JYP, or group's official channel) contributes to the social score. Don't loop; watch through, then replay.
5
Coordinated streaming weeks — Fan unions organize "streaming guides" that tell fans exactly when and how long to stream for maximum chart impact, especially in the first 24–48 hours after release.

📣 How Fan Chants Work

Fan chants (팬 응원법, paen eungwonbeop) are specific phrases fans shout during precise moments in a song — usually during instrumental breaks or between lyric lines. Every K-pop song has an "official fan chant" distributed by fan clubs.

At live performances and music show recordings, the fanchant creates a unified wave of fan participation that's clearly audible in broadcast audio — idols love hearing it and often react to it on stage.
